After Jesus, Martin Luther is the person Schweitzer by far most often cites in his sermons. A liberal theologian for whom one feels Jesus present at work for his future, Schweitzer is less interested in Luther as the champion of salvation by faith alone than the man of prayer who fought for peace, recognised people’s ‘secular’ vocation (Beruf), and defended animals. Nevertheless, Schweitzer does not shrink back from criticising the Reformer’s « shortage of love » and several of his teachings, most notably the doctrine of predestination as presented in The Bondage of the Will (1525).
