In Nantes, on the night of May 6, 1560, vicious pamphlets were affixed to the doors of the homes of the city’s four chief judicial officers. This episode has long been known to historians, although the content of the texts, known as the « placards of Nantes », remained unknown. The four texts shed light on an aspect of Huguenot militancy at the beginning of the religious troubles. They show that in the context of the conspiracy of Amboise, the Huguenots develop a defamatory rhetoric which also built on the great themes dear to the Calvinists. From then on, royal officers became very attentive to the production and circulation of pamphlets and printed books in their city.
