Anna-Maria van Schurman (1607-1678) is well known for her advocacy of women having access to academic study and for her decision to join the community of Jean de Labadie at the end of her life. Less well known, however, are her exegetical works, written when she still adhered to Calvinist orthodoxy. This study examines her biblical scholarship, which subtly blends recourse to oriental languages, reference to Jewish and Muslim sources, and respect for the orthodox doctrinal framework. It reveals a theologian who has fully mastered all these fields, but is also cautiously open to the recent millenarian theses of authors such as Joseph Mede.
